George Sudarshan had a talent that is rarely rewarded in science: he arrived first. First with the ideas, first with the right formulations, first with the conceptual frameworks that others would later make famous. He arrived when the ground was not yet ready, when the language had not yet been tamed, when there was no audience willing to understand. And arriving too early, in a system that loves discoveries only when they are ripe for applause, is a subtle form of invisibility.

Sudarshan traversed twentieth-century physics like a continuous interference pattern. Quantum optics, quantum field theory, open dynamics, even the idea of particles faster than light — tachyons — which for many were a theoretical gamble, were for him a legitimate question posed in the right language. He did not issue provocations; he built architectures. The problem was that others often came along later, with a simpler narrative, an easier name, better timing. Textbooks settled on their versions. Awards went in another direction. His name remained there, cited — when he was lucky — in small print.

Yet Sudarshan never stopped thinking. He did not turn frustration into cynicism, nor injustice into an alternative career of resentment. He continued to work as if physics were a conversation with reality and not a competition with colleagues. He said something that belongs at the entrance of every department — but above all at the entrance of every life that claims to be authentic: discovery is not the moment when you are recognized; it is the moment when you understand something that did not exist before. Everything else is the administration of merit.

This story, for me, is a harsh and necessary lesson. In my own inner search, I have had to reckon with something similar: the idea that being first to understand guarantees nothing. That having early insights does not automatically place you at the center of the story. That the world is often not ready for who you are — and this does not mean you are wrong. It only means that time has inertia. Physics has taught me that metastable systems exist: states that are correct but not yet accepted. States that are real but not yet observable. Living in one of those states requires a particular strength, because you lack the comfort of external confirmation.

Sudarshan taught me that the real risk is not going unrewarded. The real risk is beginning to believe that value is synonymous with the prize. When that happens, you stop doing research and start doing strategy. You stop listening to the questions and start chasing consensus. Physics — the kind I love — is incompatible with that drift. It demands fidelity to ideas even when no one is watching.

It demands that you keep thinking as if recognition were not a relevant variable. It is an uncomfortable position. But it is the only one that does not corrupt thought.
